Nat’s Big Green Land

Green with envy

Strange indeed are the ways of the world. On one hand you have people crying themselves hoarse about the damage carbon footprint leaves and on the other, there are people who don’t seem to care a whit and seem hell bent on adding to the damage. A Guildford plasterer will hardly, if ever, be appreciated for the steps he takes in reducing the carbon footprint in his sphere of work. But the paint companies that sell paint laced with deadly doses of lead can get away easily due to the clout it wields.

The Green Birthday Party

posted by admin in Uncategorized

Lead by example. It is the only way forward, and it is vitally important to remember. People who are passionate about the environment need to promote our cause by showing the world just how joyful and colourful it is to go green in all aspects of our lives. A kids party is one of the most important times to lead by example and embrace an environmentally conscious ethos. Try to make the party sustainable in three main areas:

  • Sustainable Gifts
  • Vegan Food
  • Recycled Decorations

The first thing to tackle is figuring out how to encourage sustainable gift giving. The necklace pictured about is from a jewellery shop that features recycled items for kids. They were really affordable so I got one for each of the kids'party bags. They also offer special events sessions where they will come to your party and lead a craft session so the kids can make their own bracelets or necklaces.

It is best to make all of the birthday food vegan. This is the highest ethical standard. There are an abundance of recipes and instructional videos available online. Additionally, many supermarkets have cake mixes that are suitable for vegans. Though, in terms of environmental impact, it is better to make cakes from the whole ingredients, because it uses less energy. Similarly, avoid processed foods as much as possible. The carbon foot print of a frozen vegetarian hot dog or burger can be astronomical. Home made pizza is a great option and not that difficult. It can even be turned into a party activity!

Making home made bunting from old magazines, boxes and newspapers is the one of the most fun ways to get ready for a party. It is also too simple.

  • Make a template
  • Grab a bottle of PVA and a couple of paint brushes
  • Stick different pictures cut out from magazine onto triangles of news paper

Afghanistan’s Mineral Deposits

posted by admin in Uncategorized

A war torn country like Afghanistan needs desperately an economic miracle in order to recover and actually grow in terms of financial stability and against poverty that keeps increasing in the country. And this seems absolutely achievable as a US military task force assists Afghan specialist in their effort to discover and locate mineral deposits in the country and to assess the possibility of extracting various fuels from the land. And along with the good news of such deposits, concerns keep growing from various international organizations as to the side effects should such vast mineral deposits be worked upon.

Main emphasis is put on the North-Eastern territories of the country. According to specialists and US military experts that have conducted the research using military equipment, this particular area of the country is rich in metal resources and thus particularly attractive to any future business development related to resource extraction. In economic terms, the realization of a massive mining project in this area can resolve deeply concerning issues such as high unemployment rates and poverty. Additionally, the area can actively participate in secondary and supporting initiatives that would aim different resource related businesses - for example oil tank production from the extracted metals, household appliances ready for export etc.

Significant amount of oil and natural gas can also be discovered recently as the monitoring processes reveal promising signs of oil deposits and gas pockets under certain areas near certain mountain chains in the country.

However, another problem is arising from these newly discovered and discussed mineral deposits. The country’s environmental protection initiatives are almost absent and do not form any part of economy-assisting state core. Furthermore, the development of such industry would lead to rapid expansion of factories since the state would be willing to quickly develop employment and economic advantages. This leaves almost no space for environmental considerations and at least a decade would be necessary for the country to undertake any actions towards ensuring greener economy.

Dirtiest Air - In Iranian Cities

posted by admin in Uncategorized

A Study by the World Health Organization has been conducted to measure the levels of airborne particles in the air of major cities across the world. The research has concluded that the dirtiest cities across the world are in Northern Africa, Pakistan, some Middle East countries and Mongolia. China and India are also in the chart, however, Chinese seem to have made an effort to maintain cleaner city environment where India shows significant improvement in its environmental protection schemes for urban population.

The champions in air pollution are two cities in Iran - Sanadaj and Ahvaz were rated most polluted cities in the world where the level of pollution was some 20 times higher than the healthy rates. According to specialists the reason is the lack of air filtering facilities and special installments in the industrial sector. Furthermore fuel factories in Iran are closely situated to urban areas which allows pollution from production to access the city areas without being able to be dispersed within the air. Iran has a strong natural gas industry and the country is using the resource for electricity production extensively with an economy relying solely on this particular resource. And while people in the country might not be aware of the caravan insurance schemes that the West appreciates, they are quite aware of the effects of pollution - according to the World Health Organization, hundreds in Iran die as a result of air pollution (or it being a contributory factor leading to heart and lungs problems).

As seen in the picture above the airborne particles (PM25 and PM10) are far smaller than fine beach sand or the human hair. Thus they are easily inhaled without body mechanisms (such as nose hairs and protective lung tissues) being able to capture them and push them out of the organism. This is one of the main reasons why such serious pollution with airborne particles would continue to influence the population in areas where they are a significant percentage of the air pollution ingredients.

How do we teach our kids about being green?

posted by admin in Uncategorized

Being a parent is hard enough without adding in even more pressure; you have to worry about so many things…being healthy, getting enough exercise, staying fit and doing things all together so the children feel included and loved. It’s even harder when you’re a single-parent-family, of course. Suddenly you have three times as many responsibilities and so much less time. What about what you want to do? What about your hobbies? What about the passions you had before you became a parent to your children?

And it gets even harder when you get told you need to teach your kids about being green and not polluting the environment, right?

stop and chat with them about the ozone layer and why it needs to be protected

The good news is it doesn’t always have to be so hard. There are ways of incorporating green issues into regular living which can make it fun to kids and allow them to learn about why having a small carbon footprint is important. Things like:

  1. Visiting the local farm: it’s common knowledge that farms revolve around the cycle of life. There you can learn about reproduction, agriculture, and responsibility when looking after animals too!

  2. Let the kids learn about fuel by talking to the farmer about his tractor with them: for example, we nipped down to the local farm the other day while a Red Diesel Brighton lorry was unloading its fuel into the big container. The farmer had no problem with explaining to the children how much more economical this kind of fuel is, and so they learned why it is important not to waste things (which is something that can be applied to the carbon footprint, of course).

  3. Teach them using drawings: drawings are great because the kids can do them too! Why not draw the earth and get them to draw the planets? Then, when they need a break, stop and chat with them about the ozone layer and why it needs to be protected from harm. Remember: kids respond much better to things when they are fun and not a lecture. But I probably don’t need to tell you that, right?

  4. Make not using plastic bags fun! This is one of the best and simple games there is. When you go to the supermarket, take other kinds of bags…as long as they aren’t plastic! Then, ask the kids to go around and get items without using one plastic bag. This will teach them that they don’t need to rely on plastic and can do just fine without it, thank you! Before long they’ll hate the idea of plastic bags, which is certainly no bad thing considering plastic is generally 100% non-bidegradeable.

Casting our minds to the future … What do we see?

posted by admin in Uncategorized

When we cast our minds to consider the environmental impact our day to day lives is having upon our world, the picture can be pretty grim. The vision is strewn with smog layered cities, oil tank seas and black plumes of smoke billowing from every crevice. However, although this dark picture of what our future may look like frightens many, little are prepared to act now to stop its realisation. The ways in which we can change our daily routines More

We are constantly facing challenges due to depleting resources, yet the awareness has not hit the mark yet.

If only we can naturally follow a process of ensuring certain energy saving tactics and instill it in ourselves, the coming generation will automatically More

Green Energy – Its Sources

posted by admin in Environment

Oil, natural gas, and coal have fallen into the category of endangered natural resources today. Their extinction or rather exhaustion is imminent and it is only a matter of time that the reality would occur. Specialists and other people in the know have predicted a further maximum period of fifty years to their availability. It is for these reasons that the world has now turned its attention to come up with an alternative and the one that is closest to being a viable alternative to these types of energy sources is named as green energy.
